Owlcrate – September 2017

Hey all!

I have a bit of a different post for you today. I’ve recently been sharing some tweets about my love for books which I haven’t really shared on the blog that much.

I have so many books of so many types, and when I heard of monthly book boxes I was so excited to see what they contained. There are many available but I chose to try Owlcrate. It’s a subscription box for young adult books and comes from the U.S. They seem to have a bigger range of book box subscriptions in America but there are a few in the UK too.

The theme for this box was Mythical Creatures, so I couldn’t resist but sign up. Knowing the box would contain the following pretty much meant I had to get it:

This box is perfect for fantasy and mythology lovers! Our book pick is an intricate story about politics, survival, finding your inner strength and DRAGONS! SO MANY DRAGONS! The book will also have an EXCLUSIVE COVER, signed bookplate and letter from the author!
There will be exciting items inspired by Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter and more!
There will also be an item we’ve received hundreds of requests for over the years…we can’t wait to officially reveal it!

In addition to this, throughout the month there were little suggestions and reveals on their Instagram page so I couldn’t wait to see what they were. As I hadn’t received anything like this before I was very excited and couldn’t wait to see what was in it, nor did I mind at all what it was!

When the box arrived I threw myself into the autumnal vibes and couldn’t wait to use my new props!

Here’s a list of everything included in the box:

  • Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows
  • Dragons of the Fallen Isles: A Guide by Jodi Meadows
  • The Soap Librarian Son of Poseidon Eucalyptus Tea Bath Salts
  • Ink & Wonder Designs Wooden Bookmark
  • Book Beau Book Sleeve
  • Hagrid & Hippogriff sticker
  • Dragon purse
  • OwlCrate Mythical Creatures Pin

I was quite excited to receive the book, it has an exclusive cover just for Owlcrate subscribers which is a great touch. There’s also a guide for the book and a letter from the author, all of which make it feel very exclusive. I haven’t managed to read this yet as life has taken up so much of my time, but I’m hoping to get to it soon.

There was also a bookmark from Ink and Wonder designs, I’ve seen these around a lot and am so pleased to get a Game of Thrones inspired one! I actually don’t have any book marks at the moment so it was perfect for me and has been having some use recently!

The tattoo type designs are really appealing and the colours are so vibrant against the wood but they still have so much detail. I now know that I need more of these.

One product I wasn’t sure about was the dragon coin purse, it’s not really something I will use personally but will keep it in case I think of anything I can use it for.

I hadn’t heard of the Soap Librarian but some of the bath salts in this range sound amazing. I received the Son of Poseidon and this smells of eucalyptus, the scent is amazing and I can’t wait to try them out. The only disappointment I can see is that the pot is really small….normally a pot of bath salts is much bigger so I did kind of expect them to have more inside.

Look how much the colour glows though!!

Another much anticipated item was the book sleeve from Book Beau. I’ve seen these all over instagram and was looking forward to getting my own. It has not disappointed, they are beautifully made and the unicorn design is perfect for the theme. I’ve shown my mum and she loves the sound of them so might be trying to make her own now (she’s retired and sews a LOT – fingers crossed for some more if she has any spare!). She also said it was good quality so it’s got the mum seal of approval!

Lastly there was a Hagrid and Buckbeak image which I think is a sticker, and a mythical creatures pin but I’m not 100% sure I received it….

By signing up you agree to a rolling monthly purchase so if you want to cancel you need to do this before a certain date each month. I miscalculated and ended up with another box (I’d love to have them every month but sadly can’t afford it!) so I may also write a post on October’s box which is ‘Find me in the Forest’ and has arrived already.

These book boxes cost $29.99 which works out as £22, this is a great amount and I’d happily pay it again. However with postage on top it cost £45 at the full price so it’s a big commitment. There are many discount codes available which will help bring the price down (I used one on my original order), but this will only be applicable to the number of boxes you sign up for, i.e. a 1/3/6 month subscription, any in addition to this will be full price.

I’d love to continue but unfortunately the price is too much for me, so I’ve been on the hunt for a UK equivalent in the hope I can find some new reads without breaking the bank.

Have you tried Owlcrate? Have you tried any other book subscription box? do you want to see next months box too?

Let me know and I can share pictures!
