Porro Wellfield Road - Cardiff

Good morning all!

Isn't the weather glorious??? We've been so lucky this week with some real sunshine, I hope it's going to stick around.

On Tuesday we were invited to try out the new menu at Porro on Wellfield Road in Cardiff. We've previously been to their other branch in Llandaff for a different blogger event but never been to this restaurant, so we couldn't wait.

Falafel Kitchen - Cardiff

Hey all!

We've mentioned a few times recently that we've both gone vegetarian - for different reasons but we both enjoy food and cooking so much that we've fully embraced it and have been trying new recipes as well as new eateries.

The next on our list was Falafel Kitchen, found on Crwys Road in Cardiff.

Milgi's Cardiff - Review

Hey All

About 6 weeks ago I made the decision to try and lead a vegetarian lifestyle, I went completely cruelty free in all make up, beauty and home products I buy last year and decided it was time to try a vegetarian lifestyle too, it has been a discussion and debate for a while with C as we cook almost every meal from scratch and would mean a change to his diet or double the cooking for whoever was cooking that night. So when he went on his last work trip I decided to take the plunge so I could do it while he was away and then work his meals with meat into mine.

We've been a few times before and sampled the pizzas which we thoroughly enjoyed, but this time they have a new menu with many extras I hadn't noticed before...including.....Nutella pizza. Actual Nutella on a pizza! Who wouldn't want to try that out?!

But let's talk savoury first.

Celtic Manor Spa Weekend

Hey All

Before Christmas I was lucky enough to win a weekend break at The Celtic Manor with spa treatments. To say I was excited was an understatement and of course I took L with me. I've stayed in Coldra Court before (review here) but never the main resort so couldn't wait to see the difference.

We decided to book for the middle of January so we could relax after the Christmas rush. We headed down on Friday night after work to the resort.

We got settled into our room which had the most amazing marble bathroom! Of course we took selfies. The photos I took of the room didn't come out well and show it off to it's best. I think The Celtic Manor is a thing of preference with regards for decor, for me I love it, it's old fashioned but looks good and reminds me of the hotel I stayed in when I was in Disney.

Slunks Cardiff

Hey All

Hope you've had a good weekend. It's nearly Christmas, I'm so ready for a few days off work now. If you've been following the blog for a while now you'll have noticed my hair changes colour a lot.

Here's a selection of some of the colours it's been, as you can see I've tried a lot of colours (there was a bright blue but I can't find a photo) and it gets change regularly. Since moving to Cardiff I've switched between salons a lot. I struggle to find one I like long term so usually just dye my hair myself and then go for a cut. I've now found a salon that are amazing though and perfect for what I want.

Back in November time last year I saw a post asking for hair models, as I like to save money wherever possible I got in touch. I'm totally laid back when it comes to hair so I've done hair modelling before because with colour a hairdresser can do anything they like to it.

Photo credit Alex Keen, Hair Slunk, MUA Ryo Love.

This was the finished result!!! How amazing is the colour. I knew straight away I'd found a hairdressers.

My hair was bleached up for this shoot at the end of Jan and hasn't been rebleached since. I'm so impressed with how blonde it has stayed by just using the purple shampoos. Last week I decided to book myself in for a pre-xmas hair do and could not be more pleased with the results!! Beware photo spam!! The OH took a lot of photos and the colours looked amazing I couldn't narrow it down ha!

I'm so pleased with how it turned out. I wasn't sure what I wanted so suggested a few colours to them and got this amazing result!! They used a selection of Directions and Crazy Colours (possible other brands too) to create the look. The green is a directions one and now a favourite of mine. I've not had green all over before. I may be doing green and purple next I think. Joel, Chelsea and Chris are all amazing. They also do amazing balayage work and isn't all bright colours but if you are after anything a bit different with your hair Slunks is definitely the hairdressers you need to go to!

Are you experimental with your hair?

Pitch Cardiff and Wriggle Discount Code

Hey All

A few weeks ago when C and I fancied an impromptu date night he introduced me to wriggle which is an app that shows you deals for local restaurants. I believe at the moment it works in Bristol, Cardiff and Brighton.

We found one for Pitch so decided to go for it. I've been to Pitch before for cocktails and tapas but the menu has since changed so I was excited to try it out.

Pitch is based on Mill Lane and is a small little independent restaurant that has an impressive selection of menus (the roasts sound amazing!!!)

Pitch Cardiff Restaurant Review

Wriggle works by you purchasing a deal then use the code. We had a deal that was £7.50 for a pizza and drink. As you can see on the menu above the pizzas vary from £6.50 up £9.50 and drinks were draft beers, small wine and soft drinks.

Pitch Cardiff Restaurant Review

Here is my tasty pizza. As it's a welsh restaurant they had a lamb and mint pizza on the menu and as a red meat lover I had to try it. This one is on the menu for £8.50 which even without the deal we did is reasonable. It was packed full of an impressive amount of lamb and the lamb was so tender.

If you're in Cardiff I can't recommend Pitch enough and if you're in Bristol London of Cardiff it's worth downloading the wriggle app. If you use this code NYHNFL it gets you money off your first voucher!

Dirty Martini Cocktail Masterclass

Hey All

Last week we were invited to a cocktail masterclass as Dirty Martini. Of course we said yes, we were both gutted to have missed opening night and couldn't wait to try it out. If you've followed us from the early days you'll know we are big cocktails fans (the blog used to be cosmetics, shopping and intoxication) and used to post recipes to our favourite cocktails weekly.

There are five Christmas Cocktails on the line up this year. We got to make two of them the Christmas Cheer and Mince Chai. The other three include the Ambrosia Martini on the far left which has an amazing combination of cognac, white chocolate liqueur, licor 43 (this stuff smells amazing if you've never tried it), yellow chartreuse and butterscotch schnapps. In the middle we have the Sticky Toffee Fizz (the flute is covered in powdered yoghurt and berry!!) With rum, tequilla, caramel, pimento dram liqueur and prosecco this sounds like a winner to me. The 4th cocktail along in the picture above is the Quince and Walnut Old Fashioned this one has whiskey, sherry, bitters, quince jelly, walnuts, mandarine napoleon and sugar in. I'm intrigued by this one and definitely want to try it out.

Dirty Martini

Dirty Martini is set on St Mary Street and an ideal location. I wasn't sure what to expect even though I've been to the one in London but when I walked in I was so impressed, even though it's a big open space it doesn't feel it. The decor, furniture and bar are all amazing.

How amazing is the artwork!!

The cocktail masterclasses are £30pp and include making two cocktails, festive sharing platters and a Bellini on arrival. You also get your own bartender for the duration of the class. Considering the Christmas cocktails are £9 each it's a bargain and such a great experience. We loved getting behind the bar and making our own.

As we got being the bar we were so impresses by how many fresh ingredients there were. The bar area was also super clean which is always nice to know! Look at all the dried fruits and different bits that also get added to the cocktails!

First of all the different equpiment was explained and what cocktails they were used for as well as how to seal the shaker! Nobody wants that leaking out on them!

First up we made the Christmas Cheer. This has two different Gins, Cherry Liqueur, Raspberry Syrup, Luxardo Maraschino, Orange Bitters and Pomegranate in! This was sooooo tasty. The cherry was a good flavour and didn't taste artificial. I find cherry such a hit and miss flavour. The orange bitters in this really make the difference. I was surprised how much two splashes can add. How pretty is this garnish. We got to spray paint a cherry gold for the occasion. The finishing touches that go into the cocktails is so impressive.!

The food was amazing on the festive platters, we got polenta chips, mac and cheese balls, fried chicken, beef sliders, salmon nicoise and tomato arancini. It was all so good!!

Then we got to make our last cocktail the Mince Chai (I was really looking forward to this one!) This contained Bold London Spirit, Pimento Dram Liqueur, Ginger Bread Syrup, Chai Tea Syrup, Apple Juice, Egg Whites, Cherry Bitters and Citric Acid.

I'm always a bit sceptical of cocktails with egg whites in but when shaken well the eggs create and amazing foam and it really did taste delicious. It smelt like a Christmas yankee candle and I mean that in a good way! We had to try to float the dried apple and the star anise on top!

Dirty Martini

L and I were so impressed we're going back for our annual Christmas Night out. We can't wait to tuck into the platters and try some more cocktails from the menu.

They also have great happy our deals we can't wait to try. Mon - Thurs happy hour runs from 3pm-10pm, Fri and Sat 12-9pm and Sunday all day long. Happy hour includes 2 for £20 on sharing platters (L and I are planning to sample two from the menu and pig out!!) and half price Dirty Dozen Cocktails and Martinis! We can't wait to try out the iconic Martinis. We've been looking for somewhere to replace our once beloved Ten Feet Tall (anyone else been disappointed with it lately) and we think we've found it!

Have you been to Dirty Martini?

Kiehl's Event - Cardiff

Morning!

Have you tried Kiehls? I've not tried a single product, so when we were invited to an event in the new Kiehls store in Cardiff I obviously couldn't say no.

I didn't know much about Kiehls as a brand but we were given an introductory chat which was really interesting, I had no idea how old Kiehls was nor how it started. Being a scientist I appreciate the fact it started as an apothecary waaaaaaaay back in 1851 and some of the developed products are still used to this day.

When they say the products have been 'expedition tested' they really mean it too - some of these products were used in trips to the top of Everest and in Greenland. They also help a range of charities including HIV/AIDs and local schools, plus they have a recycling program where you can return empty products for new ones by collecting stamps.

Cardiff Fashion Week

Hey All

Last week I headed to an event to showcase what was going to be at Cardiff Fashion Week. L has been to a previous Cardiff Fashion week (you can see that here) and we've been to London for Fashion Week a few times so I was excited to see what Cardiff has to offer!

With the Atrium being in the city centre, having a Fashion Week in Cardiff could really help promote up and coming designers and showcase what the city has to offer. As someone who moved to Cardiff after uni I do love things that help promote what a great city it is!

Cardiff Fashion week is running from 22nd - 29th October with loads of great activities going on. 29th Oct is Fashion Show day. Tickets are available for the shows which will be showing off students work, high street fashion and some Welsh Designers (I'm sad I'm away this year and will be missing it!!). There is also a designer village with fun workshops going on and stalls to visit, if you visit the sponsers page you can find some of the brands that will be there.

I got to meet the designer behind The Power of Greyskull (check out the clothes!!) who designs amazing workout gear. I'll be ordering some as the best part is it's all bespoke made so I can easily get leggings that are long enough!!

Here is the link to the website with the full line up of what the week has to offer with fun things happening during the week, It's in perfect time for some half term activities!

Are you heading to Cardiff Fashion Week?

Lou Lou's Cardiff Vintage Fair

Hey All

So I've spent the last week celebrating my birthday. L and I went to Lou Lou's vintage fair on Sunday morning before heading for food and cocktails with some other friends. L had been before but I hadn't made it to one yet and couldn't wait to go and see it after some of the bits she's previously picked up.

In Cardiff Lou Lou's Vintage fair is held in City Hall. I love this building it looks so amazing and is a great location to hold it. The next Cardiff one is on the 4th September. We headed down at 10 am when it opened as it can get quite busy and we wanted to browse around before it was too busy.

L and I couldn't resist stopping for a cup of tea!! The cakes looked amazing but we resisted as we were off out for lunch! I love that they are served in vintage tea cups!!

There were loads of stalls selling amazing fashion pieces, I was loving all the sequins! I'd gone with the idea of buying a ring but L and I both ended up spending a fair bit on make up whilst we were there as there was the brand 'Outside the Box' there. We loved the look of it and the story behind it so we'll be sharing our thoughts on it soon!

Untitled

There were loads of cute trinket boxes and amazing vintage mirror and brush sets I wanted.

This stall had some amazing jewellery and I couldn't resist a new floral crown!

The vintage fair is great to browse around and only £2 entry per person! We'll definitely be back again. I loved browsing all the different stalls! You can see L's previous vintage hauls from Lou Lou's Fair here and here

Life Lately

Hey All

Today is actually my birthday, I spent yesterday with L we went to Lou Lou's vintage fair then off for food and drinks with some other friends which was awesome. It feels like ages since I've done a life lately post. I used to love doing these but with my blogging being a little more sporadic lately I always want to share some products I've been loving when I've got the time to post but thought today I'd share some things I've been up too.

DSC_3375

A few weeks back I headed to London with my family to watch my super talented friend in Mamma Mia as Sky. I'd seen it with friends but my parents wanted to see it. He makes me so proud. My parents and I stayed in Camden, it was my first trip to Camden and I absolutely loved it. The vibe there is amazing and I fell in love with Camden market. He's in wicked soon so we'll be back to see that.

DSC_3413

I've been loving my Miss patisserie baths to relax in. L reviewed this amazing one here.

C came back from a work trip in June but was only home for 3 weeks before jetting back to Saudi for the next four so we treated ourselves to a night at Coldra Court. We loved it there and was great to have us time. Even though we live together it's nice to have nights away.

DSC_3445

It's also been my niece's birthday recently so as tradition goes I made her birthday cake. I'm so glad I finally got to make a princess one. It ended up being way too rushed so didn't turn out totally how I wanted as my dad decided as I woke up he would like me to cook a roast dinner too, so queue mad panic of cooking full roast and decorating this,

L and I headed off to glastonbury for the second time and took C and one of my friends from back home with us. We definitely felt more tired this time and the mud was even worse than last time but it was absolutely amazing!!!!L and I were loving the glitter and bindis this year. I posted some of my festival hair styles and tips here.

DSC_3608

C and I are trying to make our house a home and making a feature wall of our photos on the stair case. It's so almost finished now and I'm loving it.

DSC_3617

As C jetted off with work before my birthday we celebrated early and headed to Chapel 1877 in Cardiff. I've wanted to go and sit in the confessionals for ages and we managed to get one. I was so excited and we had an awesome meal and loved it there.

So that's what I've been up to lately. This year is definitely whizzing by. I've been busy organising holidays and things at the moment too. I'll be doing some more travel posts soon too which are probably some of my favourites lately.
